Connectivity: Thread, Bluetooth, and Matter
One of the biggest selling points of the Eve Motion Sensor is its support for cutting-edge connectivity protocols. Here’s a closer look at how these technologies work and what they mean for your smart home.
Thread: The Future of Smart Home Networks
Thread is a low-power, low-latency mesh networking protocol that’s becoming increasingly popular in smart home ecosystems. Unlike Bluetooth, which relies on direct connections, Thread devices communicate with one another to form a robust, self-healing network. This ensures that even if one device fails, the rest of the network remains operational.
Benefits of Thread:
• Improved Responsiveness: Automations triggered by the Eve Motion Sensor happen almost instantaneously, especially when paired with a Thread border router like the HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K.
• Extended Range: The mesh network allows Thread devices to relay signals, extending the effective range beyond what Bluetooth alone can achieve.
• Future-Proofing: With Thread adoption growing, having a Thread-enabled device ensures your smart home stays current with emerging standards.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
For homes without Thread border routers, the Eve Motion Sensor still functions seamlessly using Bluetooth. While slightly slower than Thread, BLE provides reliable connectivity, ensuring the sensor works out of the box with any HomeKit setup.
Matter Compatibility
Matter is the new universal smart home standard, designed to unify ecosystems like Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Eve has committed to updating its devices, including the Eve Motion Sensor, to support Matter via a firmware update. This means the sensor will work across platforms, making it a versatile choice for users considering multi-ecosystem setups.
How the Eve Motion Sensor Fits into Apple HomeKit
The Eve Motion Sensor was built with Apple HomeKit in mind, ensuring smooth integration and a user-friendly experience for iOS users. Setting it up is a breeze, and the Home app allows you to unlock its full potential with intuitive automations.

Setup Process
1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap the ”+” icon and select “Add Accessory.”
3. Scan the HomeKit code on the Eve Motion Sensor.
4. Assign the sensor to a room and customise its name for easy identification.
Once added, the Eve Motion Sensor becomes a trigger for automations. For example, you can set it to turn on lights, send notifications, or adjust your thermostat based on motion and light conditions.
This sensor has been a lifesaver since I put it in my office. It’s been running non-stop, triggering automations based on motion. The main one is that it checks the light level in the office and turns on the main light or my desk lamp accordingly. When my day is over and I’m not in the office, it just turns on the main light and then turns it off when no one’s around.
Privacy-First Approach
One of Eve’s standout qualities is its commitment to privacy. Unlike many competitors, Eve devices process data locally, meaning your motion and light readings never leave your home. This aligns perfectly with Apple’s privacy-focused philosophy, giving you peace of mind.
Real-World Applications of the Eve Motion Sensor
The Eve Motion Sensor offers endless possibilities for improving your daily routines. Here are some practical examples of how it can be used:
1. Lighting Automation
Place the sensor in a hallway, bathroom, or bedroom to ensure lights turn on when motion is detected and off when no movement is sensed. Pair it with the light sensor for added efficiency—lights activate only when the room is dark.
2. Enhanced Security
Integrate the Eve Motion Sensor with HomeKit Secure Video cameras. For instance, you can set it to start recording and send notifications if motion is detected during specific hours.
3. Energy Management
Pair the sensor with a HomeKit-enabled thermostat to optimise heating and cooling. For example, you can set the thermostat to turn off when no motion is detected for a certain period, reducing energy waste.
4. Outdoor Applications
Thanks to its IPX3 water resistance, the Eve Motion Sensor is perfect for covered outdoor areas like porches. Use it to trigger lights when someone approaches your front door.
Advanced Automation Ideas
To truly unlock the potential of the Eve Motion Sensor, consider these advanced automation ideas:
Dynamic Lighting with Colour and Brightness
Pair the Eve Motion Sensor with HomeKit-enabled smart bulbs that support colour and brightness adjustments. For example:
